Daily Assignments
Independent Reading: Each day you will need to bring a book to class for silent reading. We will spend the first 5-10 minutes in independent reading with a book of your choice.
Writer's Notebook: Every other day, you will be given class time to write in your writer's notebook. The purpose of this is to actually just practice and become comfortable with the skill of writing. Periodically, we will revise and publish pieces from these notebooks.

Weekly Assignments
Article of the Week: Each week you will complete a 15 point reading/writing assignment. Some weeks you will be given an article to read and some week you will choose your own article to read. You will read the article and annotate it, then you will write a 1 page essay reflecting on what you read, including a thesis statement, evidence from the text, and proper formatting.
Grammar Elements: Every other week, we will review a key grammar/usage/mechanics concept. Reviewing these concepts will not only help improve your writing, it will also help you practice the skills assessed on the English portion of the SAT.

Greek and Latin Roots: Each week we will be focusing on a group of two Greek and Latin roots and associated vocabulary. We will look at the meaning of these root words and find examples, define the vocabulary, and practice. This is intended to improve vocabulary and help identify unknown words.
