Description Essay
The first essay of the semester will be a descriptive essay. The goal of this essay is to learn how to effectively use a vivid blend of abstract and concrete language to describe a person, place, thing, feeling, or experience. Furthermore, the students will revise their descriptions so that they are writing for a specific purpose (exigence) other than simply to describe something for the sake of describing it. In other words, we will practice writing an essay with a strong rhetorical purpose.
Brainstorming: Writing prompts, Authentic Revision exercise, 3 topics with a graphic organizer, 1 topic TARPS, Outline, and sample student and professional essays.
Drafting: Students will draft an essay that utilizes the elements of description with a word count goal of 900.
Revising: Self-revision will involve a focus on vivid verbs, using comparisons and analogies to replace wordy adjectives, and "showing" versus "telling."
Proofreading: Focus will be on comma usage and avoiding wordiness and repetition (pun intended!)
Publishing: As writing is a process, these essays are always welcome to be re-submitted AFTER the student has a conference with Ms. O.
