Process Essay
The fourth essay of the semester will be a process essay. The goal of this essay is to learn how to effectively detail the steps of a process. In life, when trying to explain things to others, we often forget to speak clearly using elaboration and clarification to illustrate what we mean. As a result, we become frustrated when things don't turn out how we hoped. We forget that our own familiarity with something can be slightly crippling to our explanation of it. In this unit, students will strive to elaborate and clarify the steps of a process that they believe is relevant. The students will focus on maintaining a focus on the exigence throughout each of their steps.
Brainstorming: Writing prompts, Quick-fire journaling, process brainstorm blueprints, TARPS, Outline, partner activity, student example evaluation.
Drafting: Students will draft an essay that utilizes the elements of a narrative working within a word count constraint that the prompt requires OR a goal of 900-1200 words.
Revising: Self-revision will involve a focus on sentence variety, identifying exigence, and the difference between clarification and explanation.
Proofreading: Focus will be on pronoun agreement, organization, and maintaining a consistent point of view.
Publishing: As writing is a process, these essays are always welcome to be re-submitted AFTER the student has a conference with Ms. O.
